Established on the basis of the Donetsk Department of Physico-Organic Chemistry of L. V. Pisarzhevsky Institute of Physical Chemistry of AS UkrSSR.

Main research areas of the Institute are:

- mechanisms of organic compounds reactions, including those under conditions of homogenous and phase-transfer catalysis;

- analyzing chemical and physico-chemical properties of coal and its components for developing methods of rational use of coal and products of its processing;

- synthesizing and investigating the structure and properties of heterocyclic compounds, including biologically active ones.

Major research results:

A positive bridge effect – a new structural phenomenon in organic chemistry – has been discovered.

Theories have been developed to account for organic compounds reactivity in nucleophilic and electrophilic substitution and radical oxidation reactions, including those occurring under homogenous and phase-transfer catalysis.

Novel methods of heterocyclic compounds synthesis have been elaborated.

Mechanisms for metal-complex and oxidative activation of saturated hydrocarbons in solutions have been established.

Basics for spectrochemistry of intermediates of nucleophilic catalysis and processes of acylic transfer have been developed.

The theory of radical reaction kinetics in multicomponent systems has been developed.

Methods to produce oxygen-containing monomers for synthesis of pure materials used in electronic industry have been elaborated.

New methods have been developed for quantum calculations of the electronic composition of molecules; in particular, conjugated hydrocarbons and heterocycles, their physical and chemical properties and reactivity.

Technologies to produce epoxy resins for electronic industry have been developed.

Carriers for nonsilver information recording have been produced.

A new model of coal organic mass as a molecular associate has been proposed.

Theoretical bases for preventing coal self-ignition and recommendations worked out towards fire prevention in coal mines have been developed;

Inhibitors and protective coatings for oil, gas and coal-mining equipment have been developed on the basis of products and by-products of coke and chemical industries.

Technologies have been worked out to produce thermally expanding graphite for electroslag steel refining.

Methods have been found for synthesizing medicinal and veterinary preparations and chemicals for plants.
